Importing an EV from the US: where you will charge it in Georgia
A US-market EV uses different plugs from a European one. In Georgia CCS1 is on just 2 stations, NACS on 9 and Type 1 on 18. European CCS2, for comparison, is on 370.
More to the point, most of those chargers belong to one network, EcoCars. In practice you depend on a single operator.
Who this affects
A lot of the EVs arriving in Georgia come from US auctions, and a car built for the US market carries a different plug from a European one. This is not a detail. It decides whether you can charge at all.
The models that turn up most often:
- Tesla Model 3 and Model Y from the US market. The NACS connector, Tesla's own standard.
- Chevrolet Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E, US-version Volkswagen ID.4. CCS1 for fast charging, Type 1 for slow.
- US-version Nissan Leaf. CHAdeMO for fast charging, Type 1 for slow.
The real numbers in Georgia
- CCS1: 2 stations in the whole country.
- NACS: 9 stations.
- Type 1: 18 stations, for slow AC charging.
- CHAdeMO: 19 stations.
That is 29 stations out of Georgia's 609. European CCS2 sits on 370.
The part most people miss
These chargers are not spread evenly across operators. Every Type 1 station and most of the NACS ones belong to EcoCars.
So with a US car you effectively become one network's customer. Where that network has no charger, you have no alternative.
Adapters: what works and what does not
Slow AC charging
A Type 1 to Type 2 adapter is simple, cheap and reliable. AC charging involves no complex negotiation between car and charger, so converting the plug is enough. With one of these, every Type 2 station in the country opens up, and that is 243 stations.
This is the easiest fix available and worth budgeting for before you buy.
Fast DC charging
Here it is different. Fast charging involves the car and the charger talking over a protocol, and the adapter has to carry that conversation too. CCS1 to CCS2 adapters exist, but they are expensive, not every car supports them, and manufacturers often will not warrant them.
A Tesla NACS to CCS2 adapter is easier to come by, though you still need to check your specific model and software version.
Relying on an adapter for fast charging is therefore a risk. Confirm it works on your exact model before you spend money on it.
A realistic plan
- Home charging becomes essential, not a nice to have. A European car has the public network as a fallback. You largely do not.
- Buy the Type 1 adapter on day one. It removes the slow charging problem entirely.
- Plan long trips in advance. The fast chargers that will work for you can be counted on your fingers.
- Factor in resale. European-spec cars sell more easily on the Georgian market, for exactly this reason.
What to check before buying
- Which market the car was built for and which connector it physically has.
- Whether it has a separate AC port and of which type.
- Whether a proven DC adapter exists for that exact model.
- How many kW the car accepts on AC, since that decides how much you gain overnight.
