How much does it cost to charge an EV in Georgia
Short answer: a kilowatt hour on a fast DC charger costs 0.50 to 1.00 GEL, most often 0.78. On a slow AC charger it is 0.35 to 1.25 GEL, most often 0.65.
One full charge of a 60 kWh battery works out to roughly 30 to 47 GEL.
How it is calculated
Prices are quoted per kilowatt hour, meaning the energy that goes into the battery. The formula is simple: take the number of kilowatt hours you need to put in and multiply by the tariff.
An example. If your car has a 60 kWh battery and you charge from 20 percent to 80 percent, you are putting in 36 kWh. At 0.78 GEL that is 28 GEL.
If you would rather not do the arithmetic, the calculator does it in two seconds: enter the battery size, the charge levels and the tariff.
So the same car costs different amounts depending on how empty the battery is. Charging from empty to full costs almost twice what charging from half costs.
Why tariffs differ
Fast chargers are expensive not because they deliver more energy, but because the hardware and the grid connection cost the operator several times more. That is why DC charging averages about 0.13 GEL more per kilowatt hour than AC.
There is variation between providers too. In our data the lowest tariffs sit on Electrify Georgia and E-Space slow chargers, the highest on some EV Power and Tegeta stations.
Of Georgia's 600 plus public chargers, roughly 130 publish no tariff at all. These are typically at hotels, shopping centres and restaurants, where charging is free for customers or arranged on the spot.
What home charging costs
Charging from a socket at home means you pay only the normal domestic electricity rate, which is well below any public charger tariff. Drivers with a yard or a parking space charge at home for daily driving and use public chargers only on trips.
An ordinary socket delivers about 2 kW, so filling a 60 kWh battery takes all night and half the next day. A 7 kW home wallbox does the same in about 9 hours.
What to watch for
- Charger power versus your car's limit. If your car accepts 50 kW maximum, a 160 kW charger still gives you 50. The price stays the same.
- Battery temperature. A cold battery charges noticeably slower. Allow more time in winter.
- Past 80 percent. Fast chargers slow down sharply above 80 percent. On a long trip it is quicker to stop at 80 and drive on to the next charger.
- Idle fees. Some operators charge for occupying the bay after charging finishes. Move the car.
