CCS2, GB/T, Type 2: which connector do you need in Georgia

Two connectors dominate in Georgia: CCS2 on roughly 370 stations, GB/T on roughly 350. For slow charging, Type 2 is the most common.

European car means CCS2. Chinese car means GB/T. Car imported from the US means checking for CCS1 or NACS.

Which connectors exist in Georgia

Seven different connectors appear on Georgian chargers, but in practice three decide everything.

Why Georgia has so much GB/T

GB/T barely exists in Europe. In Georgia there is almost as much of it as CCS2. The reason is straightforward: a large share of the Georgian market is cars imported from China, and charger operators built for that.

In practice this is good news. Most fast chargers in Georgia carry both connectors, meaning one cabinet has a CCS2 gun and a GB/T gun. That pairing is the most common setup in our data.

If your car came from the US

This is the one case that needs real care. US specification cars use CCS1 or NACS, and Georgia has about eleven such chargers in total.

There are two ways round it. Either an adapter that converts CCS1 to CCS2, or slow charging with a Type 1 connector. Either way you will plan more than a European car owner does.

Nissan Leaf and CHAdeMO

If you drive a Leaf, note this: there are 19 CHAdeMO stations in all of Georgia and most are in Tbilisi. Check your route before driving to the regions.

How to check which you need

The simplest way is to open the charging flap and compare the shape. CCS2 has two large holes underneath the main ring, GB/T is round with seven holes. If in doubt, the car's manual states it.
